HUNGRY CITY: Pop-Up Cooking Class Takes Over City Hall on Tuesday

Portland City Hall

Summer in Oregon often means navigating between temperamental weather, countless festivals, and harvesting a ridiculous amount of colorful fruit and veggies. It's not options that there's a shortage of, but time. In the case of Oregon's bountiful produce, how can you take the goods that come from living in such a fertile valley and translate 'em into a delicious summer meal?

On Tuesday, Portlanders can look to City Hall for answers to this conundrum, though not in the form they might expect. From noon to 1 pm on Tuesday, August 9, Mayor Sam Adams, along with Commissioners Nick Fish, Amanda Fritz, Randy Leonard and Dan Saltzman will join forces with Scott Ketterman of Simpatica Dining Hall to take Oregon's summer ingredients from harvest to meal for the next installment of Whole Foods' Flash Kitchen pop-up cooking classes.

Flash Kitchen seeks to bring food from theoretical to practical by giving impromptu cooking classes in public spaces. Volunteer chefs man the kitchen stations, which are completely mobile and require no electricity. You may have already seen one of 'em in action--past Flash Kitchens took place at Jefferson High School and at Directors Park.

On Tuesday, political and culinary minds will unite to create a cold summer salad with watermelon, cucumber, fennel and mint. For each attendee at the event, Whole Foods will donate $1 to Loaves & Fishes Centers, The Meals on Wheels People, an organization that creates and delivers 5,000 meals every day to homebound seniors living in the Portland-Vancouver area.

GO: Flash Kitchen at City Hall Courtyard, 1221 SW 4th Ave. Noon Tuesday, Aug. 9. Free.
