BREAKING: Tom Chamberlain, President of Oregon AFL-CIO, is Strongly Considering a Run for Mayor

chamber

Tom Chamberlain, a former Portland firefighter and current president of the Oregon AFL-CIO, tells WW he is strongly considering running for mayor of Portland.

"I have had a number of people call me in the last two weeks about running," Chamberlain says, "and I haven't said no."

Mayor Sam Adams announced this month he would not seek re-election. Chamberlain would enter a mayoral field currently dominated by New Seasons co-founder Eileen Brady and former City Commissioner Charlie Hales.

Chamberlain says his union-organizing experience makes him a better fit for the office.

"I'd run because of jobs," he says. "I really think the issue of jobs has to be from someone who has either created jobs, or represented workers, or worked on an agenda to create jobs. I don't know if the other two candidates have done that."

Chamberlain has a history sparring with Hales. In City Hall, Hales tried to push through reforms at the Fire Bureau while Chamberlain was a leader in the firefighters' union.

International Association of Firefighters Local 43 President Jim Forquer tells WW that Hales' record has not been forgotten.

"We've got some concerns about some of the [recent] comments he's made" about staffing at the bureau, Forquer says. "It seems he's a little bit of a loose cannon."

I think Eileen's starting of one of the successful companies in Portland qualifies her as someone that knows how to create jobs. She also employs happy individuals, and has testified on policies pertaining to health care. His statement shows that he is unfamiliar with local politics.

Running for Mayor should not be something you "think about" once other campaigns are underway. It should be something that you have already thought about for some time. Eileen was there the day she had the opportunity to announce her candidacy. That says a lot.

Why I am usually pro-mustache, this guy just seems out-of-touch.

Grocery spending and employment has stayed relatively flat over the years. So when New Seasons opens a store, there isn't a net increase in jobs. Instead, they take business from union shops (Safeway, Fred Meyer, Albertsons), who ultimately cut their staff. This effectively converts union jobs to non-union.

You can put a happy face on it and call it sustainable, but unless Brady can show that New Seasons actually increased the number of grocery jobs in Portland, this is not job creation.

Just what this City needs another Union boss. The taxpayers will get screwed again. I don't think being a Union boss counts as creating jobs. Actually looking at Union membership it shows they are losing jobs/members not a good track record. I can see the City going 100% Union and all vendors and contractors will need to be union. Just figure what that will cost the taxpayer. Start with $millions and work you way up from there.

Steve,

You're just wrong about this. Have you ever looked at the staffing level at a New Seasons compared to Albertsons or Fred Meyer? New Seasons' whole business model depends on having lots of employees available to help customers. Ever try to find someone to help you at Fred Meyer or Albertsons? Good luck. It's not because they're not helpful-- it's because there aren't enough employees there to begin with. Ever see a time when they had all the checkstands open at Fred Meyer? Of course not. Now think about the same situation at New Seasons. Cashiers all over the place. New Seasons is definitely creating lots more jobs than are being lost at the other stores.

""I really think the issue of jobs has to be from someone who has either created jobs, or represented workers, or worked on an agenda to create jobs."

It's like Lloyd Dobler grew up and got it backwards.

"Chamberlain says his union-organizing experience makes him a better fit for the office."

Hahaha. Not a chance in hell. Even with a non-ironic 1978 mustache.

Tom Chamberlain would be a FANTASTIC mayor.  This guy is not a "union boss."  He is a dedicated servant of the middle class, which is exactly what Portland needs right now.

Good Grief!  "a dedicated servant of the middle class"  Since when has the Portland middle class felt well served by Portland area unions?
