Cut of the Day: My-G, "Sunshine," Vito y Coco II (Indamix Records)

Let's be real: June, weather wise, is not really a summer month in Portland. And, if we're going to be completely honest, aside from a few days here and there, neither is July. The sun mostly only shines its big fat face in August and September, when it gets sick of everyone's whining and smolders the city with heat as if saying, "You asked for it! Good luck wearing your flannel now!"

So, technically speaking, last week was the real start of summer (suck it, school). Therefore, songs built with a smoothness are still in style. "Sunshine," a track off Portland hip-hop veteran My-G's latest instrumental album Vito y Coco II, is a cool slice of melodic breeziness for Portlanders to dip their head into while they wait for the rain to return. My-G, who has been DJing nationwide as part of the ASR Dew Tour, mixes sampled-based production with live instrumentation as guitars strum over fluttery piano chords and claps. Midway through, an unknown vocalist (unlisted in the album credits) begins to croon the lyrics of Jimmie Davis' smile-inducing classic "You Are My Sunshine," adding even more to the overall feel-good vibe of the track.
