Bend Surgeon Explores Secretary of State Race

Dr. Knute Buehler

Dr. Knute Buehler, a Bend orthopedic surgeon with a glittering resume, has formed a political action committee pursuant to seeking the Republican nomination in the 2012 secretary of state's race. State filings show that Buehler loaned his campaign $30,000 to get things started.

If Buehler, a political newcomer, does enter the contest to challenge incumbent Kate Brown (who is expected to seek re-election), he'll give voters plenty to talk about.

According to a resume posted online, Buehler, a Roseburg native, played baseball for Oregon State University's powerhouse program, graduating in 1986 and becoming the Beavers' first ever Rhodes Scholar. After earning a degree in politics and economics at Oxford, Buehler graduated from one of the country's top medical schools at Johns Hopkins University in 1991 and then completed a residency at OHSU.

Buehler was not immediately available for comment.
