Poll Shows Bonamici Far Ahead In CD1 Race

The National Journal is reporting that a Sept. 26-28 poll on the First Congressional District Democratic primary finds State. Sen. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Beaverton) far ahead of her two principal competitors, State Rep. Brad Witt (D-Clatskanie) and Bureau of Labor and Industries Commissioner Brad Avakian.

The poll reportedly shows Bonamici leading with 34 percent of those polled supporting her; 10 percent supporting Witt; and eight percent backing Avakian. The poll was paid for by Emily's List, a national political action committee that support female candidates and has endorsed Bonamici. Even with that grain of salt, the results are surprisingly lopsided, considering Avakian (who earned the endorsement of the Oregon Education Association over the past weekend) entered the race significantly before his opponents, has held both House and Senate seats in Washington County and has run state-wide on two occasions (briefly for Secretary of State and then for BOLI). Another point to note: 48 percent of voters chose none of the three leading candidates, so "undecided" is still the leader. Ballots for the Nov. 8 special primary election go out Oct. 21.
