Co-House Speakers Arnie Roblan (D-Coos Bay) and Bruce Hanna (R-Roseburg) today named Rep. Chris Garrett (D-Lake Oswego) to replace Rep. Mike Schaufler (D-Happy Valley) as co-chairman of the House Business and Labor Committee.
House leadership earlier kicked Schaufler off the committee, which he chaired in 2007 and 2009 and co-chaired in 2011. That disciplinary move came after Schaufler allegedly groped a female aide to Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian at a late September labor conference in Eugene. Schaufler called the incident "innocent horseplay" and denied any wrongdoing.
Although a memo (PDF) notifying House Clerk Ramona Kenady Line of Garrett's appointment came from both co-speakers (the House is evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans 30-30), the decision to replace Schaufler with Garrett is Democrats' call.
Garrett, a lawyer at the Perkins Coie firm, spent much of last session focused on redrawing Legislative boundaries but that job is finished now. Schaufler has not been given a new committee assignment.
