Kickstarted: The Peace Speaker

The project:
The Peace Speaker

Who's behind the project? Musician Tommy Yasuhara

Why does he want your money? To build a 12 foot tall wooden peace sign that doubles as a speaker cabinet. It will carry 12 12" speakers and be used as part of PA system for performances in natural spaces (forests, canyons, caves, etc.). The money will also be used to help pay for the electricity needed to hold these planned concerts as well as pay for a covered trailer to transport this behemoth around.

What is he offering in return? For a small donation, you could receive CD compilation of the best tracks recorded at Peace Speaker shows. For a much larger donation, you will either get your name burnt into the back of the Peace Speaker itself or you could be privy to a private Peace Speaker show curated by Yasuhara.

How much is he asking for? $6,000, of which he has received $3,874 in pledges as of this writing.

Will the project be fully funded? It's anybody's guess at this point. He has a little under two weeks to hit the jackpot, but that could be hard unless he comes up with some big donations at the end.

Our final assessment: This is the kind of project that Kickstarter was made for. It's a complete labor of love, and a beautifully esoteric one at that. I mean, unless you are independently wealthy, or know folks that are willing to toss a fair chunk of money at what is an idea with a narrow appeal like this, why not find your audience in the online universe and get them to join in the fun? Above all else, it's quite a charming little endeavor that could make for some very unusual and exciting live performances.
