Newcomer Files Against Schrader For Congress

Karen Bowerman

A Lake Oswego resident named Karen Bowerman filed Jan. 13 to run in May's Republican primary in Oregon's Fifth Congressional District.

Bowerman, whose bio says she spent more than 30 years in the California university system, is a new face in Oregon's political scene.

She will seek to do what better known Republicans, including Lake Oswego businessman Mike Erickson in 2006 and 2008 and former State Rep. Scott Bruun (R-West Linn), who ran in 2010, have been unable to do—wrest Oregon's most evenly split Congressional District from Democratic control (Democrats out number Republicans by 4.1 percentage points as of the most recent tally, although the numbers will change when re-districting goes into effect in 2012).

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-Canby) will be seeking his third term this year.
