Earlier today, Mayor Sam Adams' office announced that the city had reached a settlement with the family of Aaron Campbell, an unarmed 25-year-old who was shot in the back by ex-Portland Police Bureau Officer Ron Frashour on the night of Jan. 29, 2010.
Adams extended his personal apology to "Campbell's family, particularly to his mother, Marva Davis, and his four children.
"Today's settlement does not erase the Campbell family's pain, nor does it bring back their father, son, brother, and cousin—and for that, I am very sorry," the mayor's written statement said.
The size of the settlement, a reported $1.2 million, ranks it among the top payouts in a case brought against Portland police as of last year, according to Portland Copwatch, which compiled data from city bureaus and media reports. The Oregonian calls the Campbell settlement the largest, on grounds that the city of Portland, not its insurer, covered roughly half of the $1.6 million cost of the James Chasse, Jr. settlement.
