Record Store Day is a spot on the calendar that every vinyl collector worth his/her salt plans and budgets for. The five-year-old event is when labels and bands cook up exclusive releases to be dropped in record stores on the third Saturday in April. This year, RSD 2012 lands on April 21st, and all the folks that I know are buzzing about some of the incredible bits of limited edition brilliance that they are going to clamor for (I'm gaming for the Flaming Lips and Fwends double LP and the Pussy Galore reissue 7").
Local folks are getting in on the action too. Black Prairie, Blitzen Trapper, M. Ward, Pulse Emitter, The Baseball Project, Horse Feathers, Portugal. The Man, Starfucker, The Portland Cello Project, and Esperanza Spalding all have new or reissued material dropping on the 21st. (You want a full list of RSD releases? Click here.)
The one we're most excited about here at WW HQ is the split 7" created by the good people at Jackpot Records. The disc features a pair of tracks by a pair of indie supergroups. On one side is Colossal Yes, which features members of Comets On Fire, Howlin Rain, and Drunk Horse; the other, a ridiculously great project called Deep Fried Boogie Band.
The latter is a self-proclaimed "experimental hard rock party band" with a lineup that includes Sam Coomes, Chris Slusarenko, Brian Mumford (known to music heads as Dragging An Ox Through Water), and Paulie Pulvirenti (a member of No. 2 and Nervous Christians). And as you'll hear below, their track is a smoldering slab of Sabbath/Monster Magnet-style psych rock that should make the members of White Orange quake in their faerie boots. This isn't just some one-off goof by the Boogie boys; the group will be playing a show on June 22nd at Dantes opening up for The Skabbs, a classic '77 punk band from California whose recorded efforts are finally seeing the light of day via Jackpot.
If you like it as much as we do, you'd better wake up early on the 21st to secure yourself a copy - the 7" is limited to 500 copies and available only at Jackpot's two locations. Gotta wrap this up now so I can set up my annual encampment outside of the downtown store. Fair warning: by the time Record Store Day rolls around, I'll likely be pretty gamey.
