Hi there. Every year, in an attempt at full transparency, we list the votes of everyone who was counted in WW's annual Best New Band poll. What follows is that list of voters names, titles and the bands or artists that they casted votes for. Occasionally one is listed as "anonymous"—we offer folks that option.
As I say every year, this may be a little imperfect as a result of organizing and formatting 200 emails, and we occasionally have to make some judgement calls (this year we awarded MC Tope the votes from his group TxE, though Tope would have made the list either way), and there are a few notes here explaining some of those decisions. If you voted in the poll and don't see your name here, don't panic—but do contact me [cjarman /at/ wweek dot com] and let me know. Chances are I made a cut and paste error. Similarly, if anyone sees the same name twice, holla and I'll try to fix it up.
After the ballots and the full, official letter that we send out to voters, you'll find a list of names. It's every band that received a vote in this year's poll. I LOVE googling random names from that list. Give it a shot.
Thanks for your interest in the wonkiest part of this poll. It takes a lot of work to put it together, but I think that the attention it shines on the Portland music scene is well worth it. Hope you agree. [And if you believe you should be a voter in next year's poll, email me at the address above.]

IN NO ORDER:
Neal Morgan — In the Yard is one of my favorite albums of the year from ANY CITY. One of the friendliest dudes is finally getting the attention he deserves and, in my dreams, appears on the cover of WW buried in a sea of drums.
Mean Jeans — Not "new," but who gives a fuck? Most fun band in Portland for, shit, the last four years? New album makes me pogo all over NYC.
ARCHERS — Should have made the list last year. The best marriage of dirty garage fury and experimental rock in town.
Illmaculate — He still hasn't made the list? Is this a joke? Again this should have happened years ago but this rules are easy to bend and "Under Their Radar, Over Their Heads" is the best PDX hip-hop single I've heard in eons.
Litanic Mask — Nick got me into this band and it's a nice PDX version of Zola Jesus/Purity Ring experimental goth vibe. Haven't seen a show, but I hear good things.
Randy Bemrose- Greenhouse owner, member of Radiation City, Queen Bitch.
1- The Tomorrow People :from soul ballad to Sabbath banger, a power trio with eclectic taste and chops for days
2- Pure Bathing Culture :subtle, stylized, SINGERS
3- Death Songs :the return of Nick Dellfs
4- Sun Angle :best stage banter in the biz
5- Youth :the Valentines Day cover set was awesome enough to make the list, fortunately they write good original songs too.

1. Brownish Black – Think: Detroit Dap King meets Portland Soul Sister– with an itchy new sound they call “garage soul .” This 5-9 member ensemble is capturing Portland’s neo soul flag and are a buzz band among those in the know.
2. Chervona – I cast my vote AGAIN for this revolutionary "Post Punk Peasant Party Troupe!” These ultimate party starters number fans like GoGo Bordello, Manu Chao and sweaty hordes of ecstatic Portland dancers. I call them "The rock stars of the new Peasant Generation!"
3. Fast Rattler
The son of the late folk legend Utah Phillips started this project as a tribute band and it quickly morphed into a powerful folk-rock ensemble based on Brendan’s own songwriting prowess, complemented by sideman of unusual talent.
4. Naomi Hooley
This Alaskan transplant has a voice as big as her heart. Recalling classic piano troubadours like Laura Nyro and Carole King, her “coming out” show at the Aladdin is still being buzzed about.
5. Holcombe Waller – Supernaturally gifted in voice, vision and versatility, Waller is Portland’s official Power Spirit Guide. And now possibly the world's.

I have been booking more Touring bands this last year.
So from Portland I need to say the Shook Twins.
I start them on a NW music Tour through McMenamins tomorrow.
Also Water Tower is another favorite this year.

My votes for 2012 WW Best New Band:
1. Portland Cello Project - endlessly inventive; radically creative; wildly underrated. Are they the newest band? No. Are they consistently one of the most interesting? Yes. I heart PCP.
2. Wild Flag - really, no Best New Band nod, yet? WTH. Carrie leads a deliciously rocking quartet of misfits. Good stuff.
3. The Julians - alt-classical girl group realness. Joni Mitchell to Bjork to the newest of new musics.
4. Matthew Gailey band - chill jazz, good songwriting, fresh faces. Gailey lends a tremulous voices to a strong band of mostly newcomers Neil Mattson, Julio Appling and Riley Geare.
