The It List: The Top 10 Things in Portland and the World

it list

Each week our culture scientists rank their 10 favorite things in the universe. The resulting list is infallible. The list is perfect. If you don't agree with the list, you are wrong. Some items may stay atop the list for weeks, others may only make a brief appearance. Some items are Portland-centric, but only because Portland is at the center of the universe. Please do not write to us, asking for the metrics behind the list. We will not provide source material. We will not be swayed. Bow down to the list. Love the list, as the list loves all things. Let the list move through you. (And, you know, if you have suggestions for the list, stick them in the comments section below.)

1. Democracy
There's a gosh darn election happening tomorrow, so you have one day left to get your ballot in, fucker, or you don't get to complain when our new mayor inevitably screws everything up.

2. New Seasons' Minneolas

California has had a tasty citrus crop this year, but the organic Minneolas now available at New Seasons blows everything else away. They're better than candy.

3. The 2012 Best New Band showcase

Making the list for a second week (down three spots from #1) because it happened, and it was the best one yet.

4. The "Perfect Strangers" video game
Finally, someone read that list of video game concepts we sent to Konami in 1992 and realized that, yes, remaking Sonic the Hedgehog as the story of an immigrant from a fictional Eastern European island striving to realize his dreams in big-city Chicago is a brilliant idea indeed. We eagerly await the development of Empty Nest: The First-Person Shooter.

5. The Only Place
New record from Best Coast on the same subjects (boys, beach, repeat) but even better than last time. The title track and "My Life" are standouts. The show is Monday.

6. This orangutan and his dog friend
Casey's mom sent him a story about these two in a chain email. In the body of the message, her friend wrote that the story had "touched [her] heart chakra, setting it spinning in bliss." Not the way we would have put it, but it's pretty cute.

7. LeLa's Bistro now serves pho
Is it the best pho in Portland? No. Is it the best/only pho within walking distance of WW's office? Yes.

8. Caitlin Draws Things
Look, we here at It List have no qualms about fully disclosing our biases, particularly when our girlfriends start blogs featuring MS Paint illustrations of former Willamette Week Assistant Music Editor Michael Mannheimer riding a T-Rex and destroying buildings with crutches after he tore his ACL. But seriously: This Tumblr the next big meme waiting to happen. Jump on the bandwagon now, folks.

9. Garry's Meadow milk
When you pour it on your cereal, it tastes like a cream pie.

10. Dropbox
Seriously, you still haven't signed up for Dropbox? Oh, you did sign up but you still don't know how to use it? Why is this so hard for everyone?
