Each week our culture scientists rank their 10 favorite things in the universe. The resulting list is infallible. The list is perfect. If you don't agree with the list, you are wrong. Some items may stay atop the list for weeks, others may only make a brief appearance. Some items are Portland-centric, but only because Portland is at the center of the universe. Please do not write to us, asking for the metrics behind the list. We will not provide source material. We will not be swayed. Bow down to the list. Love the list, as the list loves all things. Let the list move through you. (And, you know, if you have suggestions for the list, stick them in the comments section below.)
1. Sean Roberts of Thirty Ought Six, R.I.P.
He shall be missed, and we've been missing this band a long time.
Last week, we put K&Z's new venture, BagelWorks, in the list at number 4. Then we realized that the new store was displacing perhaps the greatest sandwich in all of Portland, the ratatouille sandwich. Vale.
So there's a whole backstory to this (which you should read here), but essentially, in 1999, singer Bree Sharp wrote a fan song about David Duchovny, which went viral before things went viral. Two people working on The X-Files at the time made a video for it, featuring every famous person ever.
5. Reed's griffin float The newly wholesome-ized kids of Reed College made their triumphant return to the Rose Parade after spending the last 75 years passed out in a gutter with a heroin needle in their collective arm. The wings flapped, so that was cool.
