Knute Buehler Reports Big Checks

Takes cash-on-hand lead from Kate Brown

Dr. Knute Buehler, the GOP nominee for Secretary of State, will need lots of money for his challenge to incumbent Kate Brown.

Buehler, an orthopedic surgeon from Bend, lacks the kind of name recognition that Brown got by serving in the Legislature from 1991 to 2008, finishing as Senate Democratic majority leader. He got off to a fast fundraising start last year but slowed this year.

Buehler came out of the doldrums yesterday, when he reported a flurry of big contributions, including $90,000 from James Young, the CEO of ENTEK, a Lebanon, Ore., manufacturer; $50,000 from Nike chairman Phil Knight; $12,500 from Seneca Jones Timber Company; and $10,000 from Larry Keith, ENTEK'S president.

That influx of cash leaves Buehler with $359,000 on hand. Brown has $249,000.
