Last week, WW reported that mayoral candidate Charlie Hales kept taking big checks from influential supporters in the days before he announced that he'd limit contributions to $600 and would not take any out of state money in his bid for the Nov. 6 general election.
The timing wasn't immediately obvious because, at this stage in their campaigns, candidates have 30 days to report contributions.
Hales revealed that he'd limit contributions on June 21. His opponent in the race, State Rep. Jefferson Smith (D-East Portland), had been talking about limiting contributions by mutual agreement, when Hales announced his unilateral limits.
On June 20, records show, Hales, a former City Commissioner, accepted $16,000 in cash contributions and pledges from five local businessmen.
The donors include three prominent developers—John Russell, Melvin Mark and Jordan Schnitzer—as well as Beaverton advertising executive Mike Clark and Roy Moore, president of a large regional construction company.
That money comes in addition to the previously reported $62,000 Hales accepted in the preceding days.
