Mississippi Avenue's Video Verite Will Close in October

One of Portland's last remaining locally-owned movie rental stores, Video Vérité on North Mississippi Avenue, will close in October.

Owner Marc Mohan, who is also a freelance film critic for The Oregonian, announced the incipient shuttering today on Facebook.

"We regret to announce that, barring a miracle, Video Vérité will be closing on October 15th," Mohan wrote. "We have tried to figure out a way to keep the store open despite the changes in the home entertainment industry, but it seems we cannot compete with the various other options now available."

The closing of the store is the latest in a three-year litany of video rental store closings. Most significantly, Wilsonville-based company Hollywood Video closed more than 760 locations nationwide after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2010.

Video Vérité's closure leaves Southeast Portland's Movie Madness and Video Lair as two of the city's final holdouts against the tide of Internet-based movie providers.

"May every film you see be a four-star classic," Mohan wrote, "and may every obscure movie you seek be available for Netflix streaming."
