Beulahland Tabletop Game Night
[GAMING] 28th Avenue bar Beulahland hosts its free monthly tabletop game night. Woo. Beulahland, 118 NE 28th Ave. 7 pm. Free. Venue is all ages until 9 pm, then 21+ after that.
Thursday, Sept. 6
Black is the Color Art Exhibit and Book Release
[COMICS] Portland artist Julia Gfrörer releases the first chapter of her upcoming book Black is the Color (which you can read here) with an art exhibit at Floating World. The comic, in its online form, has been nominated for an Ignatz Award, which is neat. Floating World Comics, 400 NW Couch St. 6 pm. Free.
PDX Startup Crawl
[TECH] Shameless self promotion #1: Grab your Razor scooters and Vibram Five Fingers—as part of WW's Portland Digital eXperience festival, this free and public event will allow all comers to nose around the offices of the city's tech startups, where they can consume booze and food and schmooze. The crawl will kick off with a 30-minute talk by local startup founders Chris Teso (Chirpify), Dave Shanley (CrowdCompass), Mat Ellis (Cloudability), Todd Silverstein (Vizify) and Amber Case (Geoloqi) at Leftbank Annex, and wrap up with free games at Ground Kontrol. PDX Music Hack Day
[TECH] Shameless self promotion #2: The second free, public event at PDX is a hackathon where guests can mess with APIs from Spotify (music streaming), Rumblefish (soundtrack creation), MapQuest (location) and Twilio (voice and messaging). Rose City Comic-Con
[COMICS] I have a story on this in tomorrow's paper, so look out for that, but essentially, Rose City Comic-Con is a new comic convention in Portland that is hoping to be a more mainstream, kid-friendly alternative to Stumptown. The line-up is pretty good for year one, and it's pretty cheap at $12.50 a day (and free for kids 12 and under). The founder is hoping to build this big enough to rival Emerald City Comic-Con, and I certainly hope he can pull it off and think it's something the city would embrace if done well. Doubletree Hotel, 1000 NE Multnomah St. Saturday Sept. 8 10 am-6 pm, Sunday Sept. 9, 10 am-4 pm. $12.50 for one day, $20 two days, kids 12 and under free with paying adult.
