Charlie Hales has a commanding lead in the mayor's race, according to new polls released by The Oregonian and Fox 12 and Oregon Public Broadcasting.

The Oregonian's poll of 408 likely Portland voters shows 43 percent say they have voted for Hales or intend to do so, compared to 23 percent who say they support Rep. Jefferson Smith (D-East Portland).

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percent.

The Fox 12-OPB poll shows Hales ahead of Smith 44 percent to 25 percent. That poll has a margin of error of 4.4 percent.

These are the first media polls in the mayor's race since KATU released a survey Oct. 10 showing Hales leading Smith 37 percent to 30 percent.

The polls shows the steep decline in support for Smith since Oct. 1, when Smith admitted striking a woman at a 1993 University of Oregon party, leading to a misdemeanor assault charge.

Smith finished second in the May primary with 32 percent. His current polling numbers are his lowest since April, when he was getting 15 percent.
