Sheriff's Deputy Crashes Prisoner Transport into Jail, Sends Five Inmates to Hospital

Multnomah County Sheriff Badge

A Multnomah County Sheriff's deputy crashed a prisoner transport vehicle into a pillar and gate at the Multnomah County Detention Center, WW has learned.

Twenty two prisoners were inside, and five were sent to the hospital for evaluation, Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Steve Alexander says. No one suffered serious injury in the crash. The deputy, who's name is not being released at this time, is still on duty, Alexander says. The deputy holds a commercial driver's license.

A monetary damage estimate also isn't available yet, Alexander says, but the jail's gate and pillar required repair. The front fender and right quarter panel of the large transport truck were also damaged, he says.

Gresham police are helping the department conduct a crash investigation, Alexander says.
