Hales Will Attend Obama's Inauguration and Ball

Barack and Michelle Obama dance at a 2008 inaugural ball

Portland Mayor Charlie Hales has quite the dance card for his four-day visit to Washington, D.C. this weekend.

Hales is visiting the District for the U.S. Conference of Mayors, but he and his wife Nancy also been invited to a bevy of high-profile events surrounding President Barack Obama's second presidential inauguration.

Hales will attend the swearing-in ceremony at the U.S. Capitol on Monday, as well as the President's official Inaugural Ball that night.

(Don't be too impressed: A Washington, D.C. society editor told The New York Times this week that the official gala isn't the hot ticket. "The official balls are for people coming in from out of town," Kevin Chaffee said. "Visitors have to go home and say they attended one. But old Washington hands know to go to smaller parties that will be well done.")

Hales told The Portland Tribune yesterday that he and Nancy Hales will attend the official Inaugural Ball, calling it "an elaborate scheme to buy more clothes."

But Hales has received even more invites. The mayor's office released his full invitation list, though spokesman Dana Haynes notes that Hales may not attend every party he's been asked to.

Here's the list:
