A gentleman of refined and discerning taste once described Portland's Youthbitch as "fucking awesome." And although said gentlemen's anonymity leaves us skeptical—he's simply quoted on the Youthbitch Facebook page—we kind of think he might be onto something.
The local quartetâs most recent single, âIâm In Love With Girls,â quickly follows on the heels of the bandâs sophomore release Donât Fuck This Up!, and not a moment too soon. The track and accompanying video are a riot and exhibit the same endearing qualities that made its sophomore album a standout from front to back. I mean, whatâs not to love about a band of drag-dressing miscreants professing their unconditional love for the opposite sex against the steady chug of crisp, distortion-rich guitars? The punchy track yet again showcases the bandâs uncanny ability to mesh polished punk instrumentation with the acute pop finess, all the while retaining the carefree, donât-give-a-damn attitude and persona Youthbitch is slowly becoming known for. The drum and bass, though simple, are no more elaborate than need be given the bandâs root aesthetics and pop-punk appeal.
It's a straightforward cut, but one that sums up the band of Portland transplants to a tee. Songwriters Nico Esparrago and Stevie Sensitive once again prove that you don't deep, heavy-handed lyrics to make a wholehearted statement. Sometimes you just have to come right out and say it.
The new I'm In Love With Girls 7" will drop as joint effort between Jonny Cat and Dirtnap Records on March 19.
