Skip to main contentThe city's first Portland Loo was out of commission this weekend after someone pulled the metal door partly off its hinges last Thursday morning.
"We've got a Loo down," Anne Peterson, who manages the city's six Loos for the Bureau of Environmental Services, told her colleagues Thursday, April 18.
A city-contracted janitor found the door hanging off its hinges at the Loo on the corner Northwest 5th Avenue and Glisan Street in Old Town.
The Old Town Loo is the first of six patented stainless steel, solar-powered, open-air public toilets installed by the city in central Portland. Its tenure has included some controversy, with Portland Police Association president Daryl Turner famously dubbing it "Randy Leonard's crack house."
By Saturday, April 20, city officials replaced the door hinges and the Loo was back in service. It's the first time the $140,000 public toilet has been inoperable since it opened in 2008.
"We think it's had approximately 250,000 door swings on it," says Peterson. "It there's something to be broken, people will figure out how to break it. But they haven't figured it out until now."
