Cut of the Day: "Zombies (G_Force Remix)," Radiation City featuring TxE

Also, watch a short film about how this collision of Portland indie-pop and indie hip-hop came about.

Radiation City's anticipated second album, Animals in the Median, comes out next Tuesday on Tender Loving Empire (currently streaming here), but the indie-exotica ensemble revealed a surprise today: The record will be supplemented, on June 18, by A Different Animal, a remix album featuring collaborations with hip-hop artists both local and national, including Sapient, Illmaculate, SoCal's Strong Arm Steady and, oddly enough, Three 6 Mafia's Juicy J (excuse me, Three 6 Mafia's Academy Award-winning Juicy J). Apparently, RadCity is one of those "Bandz a Make Her Dance." Expect to hear the group's breezy bossa nova rhythms at a strip club near you soon.

The first track released from that album—revealed today at Life+Times, the blog curated by some dude named Jay-Z—is a remix of Animals in the Median single "Zombies" by G_Force, a.k.a. Calvin Valentine, with his TxE groupmates Tope and Epp rhyming over churning 808 drums and the original's pulsing organ as Lizzy Ellison's ice-chilled vocals floats in between them. It's a revelatory melding of two disparate scenes that, even in a tight-knit music community such as Portland, doesn't happen often.

Want to know how this collaboration came together? The short film below reveals how G_Force and Radiation City first entered each other's orbits.

SEE IT: Radiation City's official album release show is at Wonder Ballroom on Friday, June 28.
