Community members and local leaders are set to attend a rally at 5 pm at federally owned Terry Schrunk Plaza at Southwest Third Avenue and Madison Street, Oregonians United for Marriage says in a press release.
Update, 3 pm: Oregonians United for Marriage has sent out their list of speakers for this evening's rally and it includes: Former Governor Barbara Roberts, Jeana Frazzini, Dave Fidanque, Se-ah-dom Edmo, Linda Campbell, Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum, Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian, Vanessa Usui, Mayor Charlie Hales, Barbara McCullough-Jones, Helena Huang Rev. Bill Sinkford, Chair Jeff Cogen, Commissioner Amanda Fritz, Gina Diaz and Regina Perata and family, Rev. Mark Knutson.
The group, which is campaigning for a 2014 vote to overturn Oregon's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, says the rulings may do little for equality in this state until the 2004 ban is reversed.
"Most court observers do not expect the decisions to eliminate the need to amend Oregon's Constitution to permit marriage equality for same-sex couples," the release says.
Portland Mayor Charlie Hales also sent out a statement this morning, heralding the landmark decisions.
"The late Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro once said, 'We have chosen the path to equality, don't let them turn us around,'" Hales says. "Today's ruling clears the way for all states—including Oregon—to be that pathfinder. And to find our way toward marriage equality for every Oregonian."
UPDATE 2:30pm: Numerous groups have sent out their support for the Supreme Court's decision, and Voodoo Doughnut is also offering its "gay bar" for $1 today at its three locations. For any needed pre-rally sugar loading needs...
