New Sheriff Asks State to Give MultCo Probe Top Priority

In what a news release terms his "first bold move" as interim Multnomah County sheriff, Dan Staton has asked the state agency that oversees police to make a probe of his agency top priority.

The news comes after WW first reported last week on allegations that Chief Deputy Tim Moore falsified his training records to gain police certification. Staton, who was sworn in Nov. 5 to replace Sheriff Bob Skipper, was head of training in the sheriff's office at the time. (The county DA's office announced last week it would not pursue charges against Moore.)

Here's today's news release from the sheriff's office:
Sheriff Dan Staton, in his first bold move since being sworn into office last Thursday has requested the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training Deputy Director Eriks Gabliks to look into the case regarding Chief Deputy Tim Moore. He also requested that this issue be given top priority. The Sheriff's Office will fully cooperate and work with DPSST. Multnomah County District Attorney Michael Schrunk completed their three month investigation Thursday, November 5th. Schrunk notified the Sheriff by letter later that day that they had found no criminal wrongdoing in the case.

Sheriff Staton will be meeting with the DPSST Deputy Director later this week. Sheriff Staton states, "We will not have our own Internal Affairs Office work on the case because of the involvement with DPSST who is in charge of all State of Oregon Law Enforcement and Corrections training and certification." He expects DPSST to respond after their investigation with a final resolution to determine potential time frames for resolution and to outline any needs they may require from the Sheriff's Office.
