Clackamas ESD Slams Rudy Crew in Letter to Kitzhaber

The Clackamas Education Service District, which provides a variety of services to 10 Clackamas County school districts, took the unusual step last month of putting its unhappiness about Oregon's Chief Education Officer Rudy Crew in writing.

The ESD took its concerns to the man who pushed for the creation of Crew's position, Gov. John Kitzhaber. As WW reported earlier, Crew, whose salary was $280,000, spent much of his year in Oregon traveling, often on trips of questionable benefit to his mission of improving Oregon students' performance.

Here' s the letter the Clackamas board chairman John Thomas sent Kitzhaber on July 24:

When Crew resigned to become president of Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn in June, he signed a mutual release of claims with the state, so Oregon will not be seeking any restitution from Crew.

But Tim Raphael, Kitzhaber's spokesman, says the management and personnel oversight subcommittee Oregon Education Investment Board, the entity to which Crew reported directly, spent much of its July 24 meeting creating stronger oversight policies for the position and is expected to approve those policies at a meeting this afternoon.
