Fear not, Portlanders: the people rappelling down the side of Big Pink tomorrow aren't invading downtown.
They're raising money for the Boy Scouts.
About two dozen people will rappel down the 42-story U.S. Bankcorp Tower starting at 9 am.
"I've done a lot of rappelling," says Diana Callaway, a 51-year-old mother of three, including two scouts. "I will have to say I have no doubts there will be some raise in my blood pressure as I step off a building."
The rappel is a long standing fundraiser for the Cascade Pacific Council Boy Scouts. The nonprofit and volunteers solve any potential liability issues of sending dozens of people over the edge of a 500-foot building by holding the event through a nationwide company, Over the Edge, which specializes in such fundraisers.
Callaway says she's also signing a waiver. She says that hasn't stopped some of her friends and relatives from questioning her sanity.
"The reaction from my friends is really mixed," she says. "Mostly its men who say they would be scared beyond belief to do it."
