To Democrats in Sunriver, Ted Wheeler and Val Hoyle Look Good

The Democratic Party of Oregon gathered in Sunriver over the weekend for their biennial confab.

In addition to boozing and kibitzing about the just-completed special session, the party faithful conducted straw polls for governor and secretary of state at a private party not sanctioned by the DPO.

Most people's presumption is that incumbent Gov. John Kitzhaber will soon announce he's seeking a fourth term, so the gubernatorial poll was all about who should be the party's nominee when Kitzhaber leaves the stage.

The results, helpfully posted on Facebook by political consultant Stacey Dycus, show state Treasurer Ted Wheeler with 53 votes and Secretary of State Kate Brown receiving 35 votes. Numerous others received votes as well.

Brown, who is in her second term, cannot seek re-election. The straw poll for who should succeed her as secretary of state showed House Majority Leader Val Hoyle (D-Eugene) grabbing 26 votes; Senate Majority Leader Diane Rosenbaum (D-Portland) getting 15 votes; Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian getting 10 votes and House Speaker Tina Kotek (D-Portland), eight votes.
