Same-Sex Weddings Would Generate Nearly $50 Million for Economy, Study Finds

Oregon's economy could gain nearly $50 million in spending over the next three years if a federal circuit court judge strikes down the state's ban on same-sex marriage, PQ Monthly reported today.

Couples would spend nearly $40 million on their ceremonies—and tourism could bring in another $10 million and add an estimated 468 new jobs, says the study (It was conducted by Williams Institute at the University of California Los Angeles School of Law.)

That's just the money generated from Oregon couples and their guests. The study did not factor in same-sex couples from other states who might chose to come to Oregon for their weddings.

Federal Circuit Court Judge Michael McShane will hear oral arguments later this month in a civil suit brought by four same-sex couples who are seeking to strike down Oregon's constitutional ban on gay marriage.
