Mayor Fills Single, Nine-Month-Old Pothole. Angels Sing.

Sam Adams

Fun times at Mayor Sam Adams' press conference on potholes this afternoon.

Dressed a bit like a Gitmo detainee, the mayor today filled a single pothole on Southeast Caruthers Street, one of many potholes marring the street between Southeast 11th and 12th avenues. Bureau of Transportation officials at the press conference said they'd learned about the potholes yesterday.

Asked how long the potholes had been there, the gathered transportation officials and the mayor said they didn't know. So while the mayor prepared to do his part to repair the city street, I ducked into a business on Southeast Caruthers Street, Phoenix Media, to see if anybody there knew the answer.

"Since the snowstorm," said Jonathan Pitts, a production manager at Phoenix Media, referring to the blast that crippled Portland in December 2008, nine months ago.

When did you report the potholes? "At least a month and a half ago," Pitts said.

Turns out, Pitts hit one of the potholes while on his bike (pictured below.) He popped a tube in his tire. But it was the UPS delivery guy who convinced Pitts to call the city to report the potholes. Apparently, the UPS worker was annoyed with the potholes, too, but he was convinced the response from the city would be faster if the report came from a bicyclist. "I was told concerned drivers don't have as much pull as bicyclists," Pitts said.
