Skip to main contentLast night's 30th Anniversary Drammy Awards was, as usual, a rowdy, largely inebriated affair, though (thank heavens!) shorter than last year. Attendants at the annual ceremony recognizing "outstanding achievement in Portland theater" wore outlandish costumes, most everyone appeared to have a good time, and no one from Artists Repertory Theatre bothered to show up to collect the company's four awards. A few winners seemed genuinely surprised—Garland Lyons, recognized for his outstanding supporting performance as the judge in Theatre Vertigo's Romance, gave a long, funny off-the-cuff speech—and Storm Large cried, a lot, when she won awards for both songwriting and acting in Crazy Enough, her ongoing solo show with Portland Center Stage.
The big winners were Tigard's Broadway Rose Theater Company, which won awards for outstanding ensemble, production and direction, among others; Portland Center Stage, with a bucketload of design awards, mostly for How to Disappear Completely and Never Be Found; and Lakewood Theatre Company, which won awards for direction, musical direction, ensemble and overall production for Into the Woods.
Third Rail took home several awards, but many fewer than the company did the last three years.
In lieu of an outstanding achievement award, the Drammy Committee asked 30 theater organizations to name the "unsung hero" who has most aided them in ways unrelated to acting, direction or design. These behind-the-scenes managers, volunteers and "Jacks of all trades" received some of the loudest applause.
