More Attendance Numbers for Major League Soccer Fans in Portland to Chew On

coverstory3

Since last we checked in on the attendance figures for Major League Soccer a month ago and found a decline of 5.5 percent from the same time period last year, two things have happened.

1) The new franchise in Seattle continues to draw well, pulling in nearly 30,000 fans a game and leading the league by far in attendance.

2) The decline in overall attendance continues to worsen, now dropping 9.1 percent compared to the same time period last year — a figure that would be 15 percent lower without the expansion franchise in Seattle.

So Seattle proves so far that a team can succeed in its first year in the Northwest. And the league proves so far that its roots aren't planted that deeply in Los Angeles, New York, Washington, DC and other MLS cities.

What's that mean for Merritt Paulson's MLS franchise in Portland in 2011? Have at it.
