from Tuesday's special election arrived quickly, given the 14.5 percent voter turnout, and there were a few surprises: The contest for the seat in Zone 5 on Portland Public Schools' Board of Education was not nearly as close as one might have expected between two candidates with long records of school involvement.
Pam Knowles beat Scott Bailey 25,055 to 15,479,
as of Wednesday morning.
In Zone 4, Steve Buel did not win the election but he did win an even more honorable contest: the highest number of votes per campaign dollar spent. Buel pulled in 9,596 votes after having spent a whooping $206.81.
Rita Moore came in second with 9,932 votes. Martín González, the incumbent after receiving an appointment to the seat last year, won the race with 20,533 votes.
