Big Bucks for One Portland School Board Race

Scott Bailey

Sonja Henning's seat on the Portland School Board is worth at least $66,025, according to the campaign finance reports of the two candidates running to replace Henning, who's not seeking re-election in Zone 5.

As of May 8, Scott Bailey (pictured above) had raised the most with $37,155, including a new $8,000 loan to himself. Among Bailey's biggest endorsers is the teachers' union, which gave him $5,000.

Pam Knowles has raised $28,870, after capping individual donations at $500. Among her more notable donors are the Portland Trail Blazers and city Commissioner Dan Saltzman. Knowles has the endorsement of WW, The Portland Tribune, The Oregonian and SEIU Local 503.

The other contested race for a seat with PPS's board has attracted just as much interest but not nearly the same amount of cash.

Incumbent Martín González has $3,860. Rita Moore raised $5,000 from the teacher's union, which endorsed her. And as of May 8, Steve Buel had $206.81.
