I know, I know. When you hear about Ban the Bag campaigns, you're probably thinking the same thing I am, which is: Portland can't ban plastic bags! If we ban plastic bags, what will we pick up our dog's poop in?
Just kidding (mostly)!
Au contraire. Plastic bags and bottles suck.
They are clotting our oceans, as Dr. Marcus Eriksen of the Algalita Marine Research Foundation (AMRF) showed, when he built and sailed JUNKraft (pictured above) through the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in the North Pacific Gyre, on his way from Long Beach to Hawaii. Eriksen's next project, with Anna Cummins, is JUNKride, a 2,000-mile bike trek from Vancouver, Canada to Tijuana, Mexico.
Eriksen will join other environmental luminaries tonight--including Jessica Hamilton, Ocean Policy adviser to Gov. Ted Kulongowski and our very own Mayor Adams--at Keen Footwear headquarters (926 NW 13th Avenue) at Portland Surfrider's Ban the Bag fundraiser
. Starting at 6:30 pm, beer and wine will be available for purchase, with all proceeds going towards the Ban the Bag campaign. Singer/songwriter Micah Wolf will provide cool alterna-surf-rock entertainment.
Never fear—if they ban plastic bags in Portland, you can always use little shovels to pick up dog poop. If we don't, incipient garbage build-up will clog waterways, kill sea life, and render environmental destruction in various other ways
. So come drink a beer and help Mother Nature out.
