Mayor Sam Adams visited a meeting of the Interstate Corridor Urban Renewal Advisory Committee Monday night to tell the assembled group of volunteers he wanted to "study" extending the southern boundary of Interstate's urban renewal zone to encompass the Rose Quarter.

The idea would be to access the millions of dollars in available funding from the Interstate area to help pay for the ever-expanding redevelopment project around the Rose Garden.

Kay Newell [PDF] summed up the group's response. "We're going to fix up a plasma TV in the front room while the children sleep on lumpy mattresses in the back," Newell told the mayor.

Several other members of the group expressed concern that the mayor's priorities would displace other, less politically powerful projects. Adams responded by emphasizing the need for a study. "I don't want to miss an opportunity that will increase our investments," he said.

Adams listened to the group's concerns and then, during a short break, helped pass out pieces of cake.
