Naomi Pomeroy one of Food & Wine's 10 Best New Chefs

Local chef Naomi Pomeroy's got a big reason to crow: Food & Wine just announced at a big New York bash on Wednesday that Beast maven is one of the magazine's Ten Best New Chefs of 2009.

Well, Portlander's might dispute the "new" part when it comes to the longtime cooker, but the "best," is a pretty safe adjective. Pomeroy, who co-owned and cooked for Portland's ripe catering and restaurant group before parting ways with husband Michael Hebb and opening Beast with Fox Chase restaurant kingpin Micah Camden in 2007, was the only woman who nabbed Best New Chef honors this year. She shares the title with 10 men, from Chris Kostow (Meadowood in St. Helena, California) to co-winners Vinny Dotolo and Jon Shook of LA's rustic dining room Animal.

Full list of all the winners, chefs raging in NYC and evil twins after the jump.

"I'm the solo chick representing all the girls of the world," marveled Pomeroy via telephone. "It's an honor, it's so badass."

In a special web package, the magazine called out her "charcuterie plate with foie gras bonbon; steak tartare and quail egg toast; chicken liver mousse with candied bacon," as dishes of hers that they loved. WW digs 'em too, but the prix fixe dining room's brunch is just as good.

Pomeroy was in New York this past week for the Food & Wine award announcement, hanging out at F&W editor Dana Cowin's apartment for drinks Monday night with the other winners. "Then we went out and raged," she laughs. "It was great." The debauchery was followed up with an all day photo shoot for the chefs on Tuesday and a gala for 600 people on Wednesday at New York's City Winery.

Pomeroy says that she hit it off with a few of the other winners, in particular, the Animal boys.

"We're gonna definitely try to do some Beast-Animal dinners," she says. "They are our evil, fraternal twins in LA."

The 2009 Best Chefs edition of Food & Wine is scheduled to hit newsstands in June.
