No, we haven't misspelled a word in that headline.
It's all part of thinking about California's Prop 8 ban on same-sex marriage in a different way. Some folks think letting the state ban same-sex marriage infringes on the rights of those religious groups that do sanctify them—after all, not everyone is Mormon—and isn't that a flagrant mix of church and state?
On Sunday, April 19, the Clark County and Columbia Chapters of Americans United for Separation of Church and State will hold a symposium on marriage equality. The Civil Rites symposium will feature a panel of professors, lawyers, and community leaders offering more insight into how marriage laws and the First Amendment have become unconstitutionally intertwined, and the severe legal consequences incurred on same-sex couples who have been denied a legal marriage.
The symposium takes place at 2pm, in Hoffman Hall at Portland State University.
