The Iditarod is Tweet!

Rachael Scdoris of Alfalfa, Ore., is 24, legally blind, and at this exact moment, commanding a team of sled dogs across Alaska's icy Iditarod Trail in the famous 1,161-mile race.

She's currently in day 12 of a race that took her 12 days, 10 hours, and 42 minutes to successfully complete her first time in 2006, the first legally blind musher to do so.

Yesterday, she crossed the Eagle Island checkpoint in 51st place, after a grueling 62-mile stretch. There are still nine checkpoints and 359 miles in front of her. The race is so demanding that dogs have to be retired as she goes; she started with 16 and is down to 12.

As she makes her way to the finish line in Nome, her dad travels along side, keeping tabs on her progress and condition. And this being 2009, all of this by-the-minute action can be kept up with via Rachael Scdoris's Twitter page.

Some of the updates are surprisingly sweet; “Rachael's recovery beverage is chocolate milk, which helps refuel her body and nourished tired muscles." Chocolate milk; who would have guessed? Mush on Rachael!
