In November of 2008, two-year-old Alec Martinez
was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He got through several surgeries late last year to remove the tumor, but he faces a long and difficult recovery through 2009.
But he is not without friends, and some very handy ones. LAIKA is sponsoring "For Alec," a fashion benefit Saturday, Feb. 28.
All proceeds will go directly to the Martinez family to help ease the cost of all his medical expenses. The benefit, which is being produced by Semper Fashion and photographer Christina Weber, is gearing up to be a dazzling multi-media extravaganza. Among the spectacles include:
- Hip hop performances by the Dynasty Dancers and Alexander, Master of Marvels
- A charity auction with items like a signed Coraline poster by Harry Selick and courtside Blazers tickets
- A runway show with clothes from local designers such as janeane marie and Beauty and the Bead.
The event will be held at the Mayfair Ballroom in the Benson Hotel (309 SW Broadway)
. Doors open at 7 pm and the runway show will start at 9 pm Saturday, Feb. 28. Donations of $15 are requested, but no one who wants to donate more will be turned away. Donations can also be given online at CaringBridge
at any branch of Bank of America by asking to donate to the "Alexander Martinez Medical Fund." Find out more at Alec's Caring Bridge page.
