Commissioner Dan Saltzman —back Thursday from the Oregon coast
, where he's been since news broke Monday
that Mayor Sam Adams lied about a sexual relationship with 18-year-old Beau Breedlove— said today his first reaction to hearing the news was "a sense of loss."
Shortly after commissioners met Thursday afternoon without the mayor for the City Council's regularly scheduled meeting,
Saltzman said he was not calling on Adams to resign and that he would wait to hear the results of the independent investigation
begun yesterday at the Oregon Attorney General's office. (He also said he would refrain from signing the letter from Commissioners Randy Leonard, Amanda Fritz and Nick Fish asking for the independent investigation, since the attorney general's office has already agreed to take on the assignment.)
Saltzman spoke with Adams last night as Saltzman was returning from the coast. "He asked me what I thought, and I told him I would support him in what he decided to do," Saltzman recalled.
"To me it's a very sad time. I'll mourn even more ... if it becomes a major distraction for everyone in the city."
