When voters in West Linn-Wilsonville School District got their ballots last month, proponents of a $98 million school bond measure faced a problem, thanks to a huge typo on the ballot.
The Clackamas County elections ballot for Measure 3-308 incorrectly showed the school district asking for "$98,0000,000" in bond sales, or 10 times the amount of the actual $98,000,000.
Though a number of voters noticed the obvious error, they still cast their votes and returned their ballots.
On Oct. 22, Clackamas County sent a letter to all voters who had already returned their ballots describing the error and announcing that anyone who wished to change their vote due to the error must get another ballot and re-vote by the Tuesday, Nov. 4 deadline. If they didn't want to change their vote, that was fine too.
West Linn-Wilsonville Superintendent Roger Woehl says he doesn't think the error will have much of an effect on the fate of the measure.
"I don't think there will be a big impact because there's been an adequate notification and correction sent out to voters about the measure," Woehl says.
Still, the correction letter requires voters to recast their ballots if they've changed their minds.
At this point, that means getting a new ballot from the county elections office that invalidates the first one, re-voting and turning the new ballot in by tomorrow's deadline.
