has already reported on a slew of fundraisers for Walt Curtis
, the local poet and painter whose home was destroyed when the church that housed both his basement apartment as well as the Great Northwest Bookstore
burned in a big fire last May. Now comes word of a fundraiser for Phil Wikelund
, owner of the Great Northwest Bookstore itself, dubbed "Phil's Fire Fund Benefit." Local musicians, artists and comedians have banded together to create the big benefit bash this Tuesday at the Crystal Ballroom.
The funds will help Wikelund finish the demolition of the building housing his store. Expect lots of jazz, blues and rock songs, from Dave Frishberg and Rebecca Kilgore among others, as well as a silent auction. Here's some of the goods up for sale according to organizers:
Some of the donations we have received for the silent auction include a private concert for 20 at "The Fey," named in last year's WW "Best Of" issue as Best Performance Space, I believe. Also, original artwork by WPA artists, rare Gus Van Sant audio from Satyricon, an original print by Icky A., dinner and endless Spanish coffees from Hubers, and a signed Dr Demento photo LP, sent because as a fellow Reed Graduate, he had heard of Phil's plight.......along with all the "usual" suspects such as a year's worth of Voodoo doughnuts, beach packages, and signed books by Northwest authors.
Phil's Fire Fund Benefit takes place at the Crystal Ballroom, 1332 W Burnside St., 225-0047. 5:30 pm-midnight Tuesday, Aug. 17. $15 and $18 at the door. Tickets available through Ticketmaster.
