After a short hiatus from several city stops on the Dew Tour's Wendy's Invitational
due to an ankle injury in June, skate/snowboard god Shaun White
is back and ready to compete in Portland. Between his recent focus on Olympic snowboarding (which resulted in a second gold medal) and the ankle injury that kept him out of skating last season and part of this tour, White told reporters hanging around the Dew Tour's prelims this morning at the Rose Quarter that he's “jonesing to skate again.”
After answering questions about Oregon (he's been visiting the state every year since he was 7 years old), his fans (“apparently I'm huge with grandmas”) and his signature move, "The Armadillo" (a frontside 540 body varial heelflip), Willamette Week
got these two very important questions in.
WW: Team Edward or Team Jacob?
Shaun White: Jacob, of course. It was my sister's birthday and she was turning 25 and I wanted to do something special because I had been on the Olympic media spree and I'm like hey I'm going to fly you and your friend out to the Bahamas. I hadn't purchased a gift yet, so I was like what do I get? And I'm in the Albany mall and I'm walking through and I just decided a gag gift would be the easiest so I bought a life-size cutout of Taylor Lautner, the dude from Twilight—the werewolf guy. So I'm cruising the mall with this life size cutout and people are like “is that Shaun?”… And so we brought him to the Bahamas…
There's photos of me and him on the plane, on the boat, the whole deal. The worst was that I got TMZed when I got home at the airport with the cutout. They're like “how was the trip Shaun?” and I'm all “oh yeah he had a good time, I had a good time, little too much sun.” Yeah Team Jacob. I'm going with it.
So tell me about playing guitar in your band.
Yeah I have a group. We mess around. It's nothing big—yet. It's just for fun. It's one of those things where you get so bored of playing alone in your room you're like "I need some drums, I need somebody else to actually make this sound like something." So yeah we have a group we mess around with so far, but no word on that... you're letting out all my secrets.
