Good Song Hunting: Cool Nutz, Ethan Rose, Menomena on Paranoid Park Soundtrack

paranoid-park-poster01Music has always been a critical aspect to the films of Gus Van Sant. We all remember the late Elliott Smith gracing the Oscar stage in 1997, donning a white suit with guitar in hand and singing "Miss Misery"—one of a number of Smith tracks that provided the score and a good chunk of the emotional impact in Good Will Hunting. Van Sant's newest film Paranoid Park, shot locally and opening this Friday at Cinema 21, also features two songs by Smith among tracks by three other wildly different Portland acts: frantic indie rock deconstructionists Menomena, ambient-electronic innovator Ethan Rose, and most surprisingly, NW hip-hop legend Cool Nutz. Yep, all on one soundtrack. Cool Nutz was "very excited" to contribute the song "I Heard That" after receiving a phone call from producer David Allan Cress requesting his presence on the project.

Though the album was released in France in October 2007, it's still only available as an import stateside—or through iTunes, which just began selling the soundtrack this week to coincide with Paranoid Park's domestic release. Rose, whose fantastic Ceiling Songs ex-WW freelancer and current Baltimore City Paper music editor Michael Byrne frequently lauded on Local Cut, lends all three tracks (albeit in abbreviated versions) from the album to the film, while Menomena offers "Strongest Man in the World" from 2004's I Am the Fun Blame Monster. Pretty strong company, if you ask me. Even Beethoven's Ninth is on here!
