It's that time again: Time to request your favorite Portland musicians and bands onto the fifth annual PDX Pop Now! stage. Remember though that, as with previous years, the folks at the fest aren't going to decide its stars using your votes alone (in fact they long ago ditched the word "vote" in favor of "requests," as to avoid any confusion). You're just making suggestions. And if enough of us suggest the same groups/artists, they'll at least get a good long look by the fest's organizers.
Wait, are you totally confused? Let me back up. PDX Pop Now! is Portland's annual, all-local, all-ages and free weekend-long music festival. It's also the name of a newly-non-profit organization that puts the fest—as well as popfest's annual compilation—together, and fights for various music advocacy causes around town. Like making it easier for legitimate music venues to allow under-21'ers.
Now that you've got all that, go to PDX Pop's website and request that your favorite Portland bands
be invited to play the fest.
Or do you think your band is way better than everything else in Stumptown? Really? Okay listen, I didn't want to tell you, but your band isn't that good. But you can still send a track to PDX Pop and try to get it onto the 2008 compilation disc (or dual-disc, as it usually winds up). Get the form for that here
Here's some press release type stuff from the organizers. It has details that I didn't get around to mentioning:
PDX Pop Now! -- Portland's premier DIY music festival -- is currently taking artist/band requests for its 2008 event. Visitors to the requests page of the PDX Pop Now! website (http://www.pdxpopnow.com/requests) can tell the organization which Portland and Portland-area acts they'd like to see perform at this year's festival and maybe even help the group learn about some undiscovered or under-recognized local music gems. PPN! is looking for artists from the all genres comprising the city's vibrant and varied music community – folk and rock, country and hip hop, jazz and electronic and so forth – and does research and listen to every band requested, so every request counts.
Last year, PPN! received nearly 20,000 requests from 3,000 individuals for 1,600 Portland-area artists and bands. The majority of this record number of requests arrived online, but the group also collected a significant amount placed in request boxes located at retail outlets throughout the city. (PDX Pop Now! once again plans to place these boxes around town.)
In other news, PDX Pop Now! is still accepting music submissions for its 2008 compilation of Portland. Area musicians have until Friday, February 29, to submit original works for consideration. Guidelines and a downloadable submission form are available at http://www.pdxpopnow.com/cd.
