Well, not literally, of course (it
is Los Angeles). But Portland was shut out of the 50th annual GRAMMY awards. As previously reported on LocalCut, the Shins were nominated in the Alternative Album of the Year (LOST to the White Stripes) and
Wincing the Night Away's producer, John Chiccarelli, was nominated for non-classical producer of the year (LOST to Mark Ronson—at least they didn't award it to Timbaland.
Shock Value was horrendous).
Menomena also lost the best packaging award to Bright Eyes. I haven't seen the artwork for
Cassadaga, so I'm going to have to rely on Amy, who says it's "actually pretty cool." It would have to be printed on solid gold and smell like raspberries to be cooler than
Friend and Foe. I know the Menomena boys didn't expect to win (Drummer Danny Seim emailed that the band and artist Craig Thompson were flying to L.A. "to celebrate Black Sabbath's inevitable Grammy win for best album artwork"), but I was convinced, anyway.
Oh well, in the immortal words of Nathan Jr., "it's truly an honor just to be nominated." But is Portland still destined to have its day in the sun? Maybe it's better to have a handful of years in the overcast?
