Election Countdown: Collymore Uses Kitzhaber in Campaign Email

In the final stretch of the Nov. 2 election, it's notable who the candidates to represent North and Northeast Portland on the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners have—and haven't—been seen with.

Candidate Loretta Smith has made no secret of the fact she's endorsed by her boss, U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.). Wyden's mug appears on the homepage of Smith's website, and in nearly all of her campaign literature—which is fitting, because Wyden has endorsed Smith's candidacy.

On the other hand, Smith's opponent, Karol Colllymore, has been relatively modest about the endorsement she's most proud of—that of county Chair Jeff Cogen, whom Collymore works for as a policy aide.

Collymore lists Cogen among the endorsements on her website. But Cogen's face hasn't appeared in any of her campaign flyers. Collymore tells WW that's because she wanted to run on her "own merit."

So we were puzzled on Wednesday to receive an email from the Collymore campaign that included a photo of Collymore with Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Kitzhaber.

Collymore confirms that Kitzhaber has not endorsed her (nor has he endorsed Smith). Collymore says the photo was taken earlier this year at a Planned Parenthood event—and she says she did not intend to deceive voters by including it in her campaign email.

"If I had thought that, I wouldn't have put it on," Collymore says. "I just thought it was fun. I looked cute in the picture."
