Portland's own bad-ass essayist and short -story writer Charles D'Ambrosio
is one of 49 recipients of the 2007 United States Artists
awards, a new prestigious peer-nominated award for excellence in the arts by artists who live and work in the US. D'Ambrosio's award includes a no-strings check for $50,000.
D'Ambrosio's dark-edged, compellingly written stories have appeared in publications including the Paris Review
and the New Yorker
. He has written two short story collections; the most recent, The Dead Fish Museum
, (Knopf, 2006) was hailed as “powerful… a remarkable achievement” by the New York Times Book Review
