Nudge, "Love-In Accident" from Elaborate Devices For Filtering Crisis (Tigerbeat6)

For all of the Nudge name checking that goes on around here, it occurs to me that many a reader still may not have actually heard Nudge. For being one of the more important bands in the city over the past few years, it's not like saying "The Shins" or "Modest Mouse" or whatever. The band--a loose, now long-dis...   More

YACHT I Believe In You. Your Magic Is Real. (Marriage Records)

[LAPTOP LOVE] It's an unfortunate truth that great expectations often lead to letdowns. Considering Jona Bechtolt, a.k.a. YACHT, is also the Blow's “I.T. guy” (as Pitchfork so perfectly put it), holding his third release, I Believe in You. Your Magic Is Real., feels downright dangerous.

Yacht, I believe in you. Your magic is real. (Marriage Records)

YACHT sets a fuse with its latest, but doesn't light it just yet.

YACHT Album Release Show Jumps Ship From OMSI, Moves To Disjecta

Well, half of it anyhow. The first half is still happening on the Crystal Dolphin [update: this part is SOLD OUT]. But, the second--originally slated to be at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry--is now being moved to Disjecta, which,    More

Is Disjecta Jumping Ship Again?

Well, they actually don't know for sure, but it doesn't sound good. The Templeton Building--Disjecta's home since the summer of 2005--is being sold by its owner, Lance Robbins. Whether or not they get to stay and realize their vast set of goals for the space, is up to the new owner. If I was a betting man (I'm...   More

Damn, My High School Sucked: Menomena Added to Cleveland High Concert

Yeah, my high school did suck, but at least I went back in the day when arts education in public schools WAS ACTUALLY FUNDED. Music programs around these parts basically live off peanuts, so as you may have heard, Cleveland Lincoln High School's student government is putting on a benefit show to get some funds fr...   More

YACHT Joins LCD Soundsystem Tour

Huge! As an insanely last minute thing, YACHT's been asked to join LCD Soundsystem--the hot shit of hot shit crossover dance music (believe the hype)--on tour...starting this Monday in San Francisco. There's really not much to say about that: big time. Congrats to Jona Bechtolt (YACHT) on scoring the gig, and ...   More

Plants, "Seedling," Photosynthesis (Strange Attractors)

Once again, Plants have written a song that makes me feel like I'm in church, or should be--whatever denomination holds their services around fire circles, more specifically. Josh Blanchard and Molly Griffith-Blanchard's voices together have never been so perfect. Molly's voice is just otherworldly. It feels a...   More

Best New Band: Extended Q&A with Dat'r

A few weeks ago, I sat down with Paul Alcott and Matt Dabrowiak, the duo behind our sixth place Best New Band, Dat'r for a long chat about their history in Portland staple Binary Dolls, and their progression into the much loved indie-crossover dance project they are now. Catch the short version of the Dat'r ta...   More

Breaking: YACHT Sets Sail!

It was bound to happen someday. YACHT, a.k.a. Jona Bechtolt, will playing a CD release show for his upcoming I Believe in You. Your Magic is Real. on an actual yacht, sailing up and down the mighty Willamette, joined by ex-Portlander Bobby Birdman. If you haven't figured yet, that last bit alone is ridiculously awesome. Last time Bechtolt played he pulled some tease bullshit to the effect of "ladies and gentleman! All the way from LA, Mr. Bobby Birdman!," and then sampling the master croonsmith. It appear they're playing separate sets on the boat, but when things move to Round 2, on shore at OMSI, Bechtolt's playing with something of a band. Which, if I was betting man (actually I am now: thanks Casey), I'd say would include Birdman and WW contributor Claire Evans, who both contribute heavily to the album. So does Eats Tapes. Could that be possible? No, no. I wouldn't dare think this could be that awesome. But, maybe....

Anyhow, here's the rundown on the night:
